Graphic Design

Graphic Design is perhaps one of the most over used terms ever. It's used to describe posters, logos, pamphlets, newspaper, books magazines and on and on and on.

And this is rightly so.

The skills learned in Graphic design apply over an incredibly large (and sometimes dizzying) area. It even makes its way from print to the screen. Typography is just as important on a website as it is on the page.

Below you'll see examples of some work in posters, Book arts, printmaking, and other projects. Look around, enjoy yourself.

Spice Classics Print

This was a product redesign project. Spice Classics is one of those little generic brands that are in every grocery and cornerstore. It's a staple brand that is inexpensive and good quality. Unfortunately it's orginal packaging was more dated than classic. I wanted to give it a timeless look that would also look nice on the shelf. To this end I stripped away the fully saturated primary colors in favor of a more nuetral tone with a band of color that matched the top. Instead of that folksy woodcut illustration, simple line drawings convey what is actually in the container.

Names Print

This latest and frankly largest project was a completed in December of 2008. It is a book of the names of the Virgin Mary. it is hand bound in the drum leaf style and contains no pictures other than the symbol on the front cover. With 160 thick pages, the book itself is fairly hefty.

I know that very few people get as excited as i do about his book, but inside are the hopes, sorrows and anger of thousands of people crying out. As each page was placed each page in the book I read them:

Mother of those who are betrayed, Mother of those who are arrested in the night, Mother of those who are imprisoned, Mother of those who suffer from the cold, Mother of those who live in fear, Mother of those who were subjected to interrogations, Mother of those who are subjected to interrogations, Mother of those innocents who have been condemned…

and it goes on.

There's more to this than one would first look at.

Step Right Up! Print

Step right UpEvery year Dominican University Welcomes its new Students with Welcome weekend. It starts with Academic Convocation and continues with a giant outdoor festival called DU Fest. Each year has a new theme and therefore a new logo. In 2008 I designed the Welcome Weekend logo. The theme was "Step Right Up!", which stumped me at first. After some drawing and talks with the client I came up with the concept you see here. I love the old carnival & circus posters and so did the client. it ended up being on t-shirts and posters and all sorts of goodies.

Masque Print

Masque invitePerhaps my favorite project so far. This is an invite to a Halloween Masquerade Ball. It is constructed by hand, with special made linoleum stamps. The only part created on the computer is the design of the pumpkin on the reply card. It consists of a box with two hinged tops and a book with windows that see through each other. This is one of those things that you have to actually see to get a feel for, but the pictures will help you understand the form.

The Complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Print

Sherlock HolmesThis is a design for a book jacket of The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes. As a sherlock fan, I have seen every incarnation of a Sherlock Holmes book jacket. And All of them have pretty much the same thing on them. Either it is the silhouette of Sherlock Holmes with his pipe and hat, or a drawing of him with his pipe and hat. Every once in a while you'd get the dank old-timey alleyway. I was tired of it.

I went for a sneakier approach. Since Holmes was all about seeing what most people miss, I wanted that to be the theme. Whether it is the coffee-stain magnifying glass or the title hidden in the words, I want the reader to get a little fun out of the cover.

The other 90% Print

The Other 90%This was a poster was made in a Typography class for an exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Musuem.

I focused on the circle to convey not only the earth, but the need for cyclical answers. One shot solutions and band-aids on a broken arm just aren't cutting it anymore.
